From 1994-1995 ILived and worked the Tangier- American Legation Museum in Tangier, Morocco. I had been there on a travelling Scholarship from the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine arts the year before, and was completely taken by the way the societies in Morocco built their Medinas (old towns) in such an organic and ingenious ways. Since there is no figurative representation in Islamic Art, the use of geometry and proportion is really incredible. I wanted to go back to immerse myself in the culture, and this museum had an Artist –in –Residency program. For 1 year, doing everything from sculpting custom lampshade frames, to building steps up to what was a secret WW2 Allied radio room, I lived and worked at the museum and took frequent trips to other parts of the country. From the small villages of the Riff mountains in the north, to the crazy and bustling Souks of Marrakech, to the dunes of the western Sahara, I did sketches and watercolors that would later be shown and sold in the gallery at the museum. It was an amazing experience that I still draw from for inspiration in my designs.
